In his work first at UC Berkeley, then as Chief Scientist at the Natural Step, and now as the founder of Thrive Unlimited and in partnership with sector leaders such as Bite Communications, Dr. Basile leads the creation and implementation of high-value sustainability strategies, product evolution, tools and actions at Fortune 100 and start-up companies, leading non-profit organizations and with community leaders. Dr. Basile focuses on creating strategic alignment between business drivers and today’s emerging market needs. Past corporate clients include the Home Depot, Nike, Bank of America, McDonalds, IDEO, Sun Microsystems, Verdant Power and ICI Paints.

Dr. Basile has served on the faculty of Stanford University and co-created a research area in the health effects of emerging technology at UC Berkeley. During his time at the Natural Step the organization won both Gorbachev’s Green Cross Award for Global Leadership and the Blue Planet Prize. Dr. Basile serves on a number of business and non-profit Boards, is widely published and speaks at a broad array of venues. He is a co-author of the text book Strategic Leadership Towards Sustainability and a co-founder of the newly established Center for Sustainability at Dominican University near his home in Northern California. He holds a bachelor’s of science degree in Physics from UC Irvine and a Ph.D. in Biophysics from UC Berkeley.

Royal Mail is the largest single employer in the UK with 195,000 employees which represent just under 1% of the UK workforce. It has a portfolio of 4.5 thousand buildings in every community across the UK from the Scilly Isles to Benbecula. It also boasts the largest fleet of vehicles in the UK with 35,000 trucks and vans covering 2 million miles every night.

Over the last 18 months Royal Mail has formulated and deployed a comprehensive Carbon Management Programme which over the last 18 months has already managed to reduce the organisations Carbon Footprint by over 30%

I previously worked in the field of preventive medicine, and the provision of community infrastructure projects, in developing countries overseas for 22 years.

Tom Burke is currently an Environmental Policy Adviser to Rio Tinto plc and a Visiting Professor at Imperial and University Colleges, London. He is Chair of the Independent Review of Environmental Governance in Northern Ireland and a Senior Advisor to the Foreign Secretary’s Special Representative on Climate Change. He is a Founding Director of E3G, Third Generation Environmentalism and serves on the boards or advisory boards of a number of environmental and other organisations. He is Chairman of the Editorial Board of ENDS magazine.

He was a member of the Council of English Nature, the statutory advisor to the British Government on biodiversity from 1999 - 2005. During 2002 he served as an advisor to the Central Policy Group in the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office. He was Special Adviser to three Secretaries of State for the Environment from 1991-97 after serving as Director of the Green Alliance from 1982-91. He is the co-chairman of the Anglo-German Environment Forum.

He was an environmental advisor ( part time ) to BP plc from 1997 –2001. He was a member of the OECD's High Level Panel on the Environment 1996-98 He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and was a member of the Council from 1990-92 sitting on its Environment Committee 1988-96. He also served on the Executive Committee of the National Council of Voluntary Organisations from 1984-89. He was a Visiting Fellow at the Cranfield Institute of Management and a Senior Visiting Fellow at Manchester Business School.

He has been a professional environmentalist for 30 years and was formerly Executive Director of Friends of the Earth and a member of the Executive Committee of the European Environmental Bureau 1988-91. He was the Secretary-General of the Bergen 1990 Environment NGO Conference 1988-90.

He has served on a number of Government appointed bodies including the National Committee for European Year of the Environment and the Waste Management Advisory Council. From 1992-96 he was a member of the Overseas Advisory Committee of Save the Children Fund. He was a member of the Board of the World Energy Council's Commission `Energy for Tomorrow's World' 1990-93.

Since 1991 he has been a member of the Advisory Committee to the Business in the Environment Task Team. He is a founding member of the Council of the Institute of Environmental Management. He currently serves on the Advisory Board for Conservation International’s Centre for Environmental Leadership in Business in the US.

In 1993 he was appointed to United Nations Environment Programme's `Global 500' roll of honour. In 1997, he was appointed CBE for services to the environment. He was awarded Royal Humane Society testimonials on Vellum ( 1968 ) and Parchment ( 1970 )

He has lectured, written and broadcast extensively on environmental matters and is the co-author of a number of books including `Green Pages' (Routledge, 1988), `The Green Capitalists' (Gollancz, 1987) and `Ethics, Environment and the Company (IBE, 1990).


Dr Richenda Connell,

Dr Richenda Connell is CTO and co-founder of Acclimatise, a specialist risk management company offering products and solutions to assist businesses in adapting to the threats, costs and opportunities of climate change. She advises businesses in the infrastructure and property sectors, and those with large, fixed assets on how to ‘climate-proof’ their activities and assets. She also works with pension funds, insurers and law firms on managing climate risks across their portfolios.

Richenda was formerly Technical Director at the UK Climate Impacts Programme (UKCIP), where she co-developed the UKCIP climate risk management framework and the world’s first web-based climate adaptation tool, the UKCIP Adaptation Wizard.

Prior to UKCIP, Richenda worked as an environmental consultant, for the most part as an air quality specialist to the power and water industries.

She holds a doctorate in atmospheric chemistry from Oxford University.

Tom was appointed as the first Chief Executive of the Carbon Trust in 2001.

A chartered engineer with extensive experience of the energy sector, Tom worked for Shell for 16 years in a variety of commercial and operations roles including four years as General Manager of Pizo Shell - a Shell subsidiary in Gabon, Africa. He moved into management consultancy with McKinsey and Co and then as a Principal with the Global Energy Practice of AT Kearney before joining the Carbon Trust.

Tom gained a first class honours degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Southampton in 1981 and completed an MBA at INSEAD, Paris in 1988.

He has particular expertise in the impacts of climate change on the utility, insurance, investment and legal sectors. John led strategic business planning for Severn Trent Water and has over 25 years experience of the water industry. Aged 41, Richard has been with M&S for 22 years. His early career was in Retail, progressing through Store Management including our stores in Belfast, Edinburgh and Toronto, Canada; he spent time as Area Controller for the South of England and in our Central Store Operations team in Head Office.

Subsequently Richard was Senior Manager in Human Resources, managing a major corporate restructure, and headed the People Development Team. He spent 2 years as Head of Change and Programme Management, becoming the Assistant to the CEO in 2001. Richard followed this role with a period as Executive Retail Operations for Clothing and Home and more latterly the programme for the Design and Development of our New Store Formats.

Richard now heads our Store Design, Development & Procurement team, responsible for the procurement of goods not for re-sale.


Charlotte Grezo,

Charlotte joined Vodafone in January 2001 with a remit to establish a Group Corporate Responsibility function. This includes working with the Group’s subsidiaries and affiliates to establish the policies and processes to manage Corporate Responsibility at the Group level.

Charlotte’s role is to lead CR for the Vodafone Group; to ensure the achievement of the strategic goal on responsible business, promote the value Passion for the World around Us and to ensure that the commitments made in the Vodafone Corporate Responsibility Report are delivered. She is a Trustee of the Vodafone Group Foundation and the Vodacom Foundation. Dr Grezo has served on a range of Government Committees and taskforces including ACCPE (Advisory Committee on Consumer Products and the Environment) and the Sustainable Procurement Taskforce. Alistair Guthrie is a Director of Ove Arup & Partners. Alistair leads the Sustainable Buildings Network for ARUP in Europe and is a Founder Member of the UK Green Building Council.

He has a wide experience of working in multidisciplinary teams on the design and supervision of services in building projects in England, Italy, Holland, France, America, Japan, China, Australasia and the Middle East. This experience includes not only detailed design work in Mechanical Services, but also Building Physics, Energy Studies, Climate Change Analysis, Daylighting, Air Movement Analysis and Microclimate Design. Dr Steve Howard,

Steve is the CEO of The Climate Group which he co-founded in late 2003. He is also a founding member of HSBC’s Carbon Management Task Force. Prior to his role with The Climate Group, Steve was a Partner in ERM where he led the work on Corporate Social Responsibility for clients as diverse as Kingfisher and ABN Amro and on climate change related projects for a range of organisations including EDF Energy, BP, WWF and The World Bank. Previously he was the founding Director of the Global Forest and Trade Network for WWF International, where he led an international team involved in advising 700 companies on forest and supply chain issues. He was also Chairman of the UK Forest Stewardship Council where he helped achieve a far-reaching consensus on a national forest certification standard. Steve was founding Chairman of the Tropical Forest Trust from 1999 to 2004, which he helped establish to respond to the need for ethically sourced tropical timber. He has a first class honours degree in ecology and a PhD in environmental physics based on work as a Senior Fellow at the International Centre for Research in Agroforestry in Kenya. Over the course of his career Steve has worked in more than thirty countries. In December 2005 he was named by Scientific American magazine as a Policy Leader within the SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN 50 – the magazine’s prestigious annual list recognizing outstanding acts of leadership in science and technology from the last year.

Andrew Jenkins,

He joined The Boots Group plc. in 1994. As a member of the Quality & CSR Support team Andrew’s role is to advise product marketing and development groups on sustainable development issues. His work includes advising the development of the company Corporate Social Responsibility Strategy and the introduction of compliance systems and sustainable product design strategies covering the wide portfolio of Boots products.
Andrew represents the company on several trade association committees and was Boots representative in the development of the Sigma guidelines for integrating sustainable development into business. This has now continued with work on the EU Roundtable on Sustainable Development standards and representation on the Bsi committee responsible for BS8900 Guidance for Managing Sustainable Development. Julian joined Global Cool from Man Group, the world’s largest Alternative Investment Manager and Financial Broker. A specialist in the Hedge Fund world, he ran Global Product Marketing and was influential in building their Carbon Emissions Trading Business.

Before joining Man Group he worked for the French Bank Societe Generale as Global Head of Foreign Exchange and Global Head of Sales for the wholly owned derivatives subsidiary, Fimat. He also served as one of the youngest ever directors of the Board of Advisers of the New York Board of Trade.

Prior to his career in finance, he served as an Officer in the General Duties Pilot Branch of the Royal Air Force for 8 years, attaining the rank of Flight Lieutenant.

Colin Melvin,

As CEO of Hermes Equity Ownership Services Ltd, Colin Melvin provides advice and assistance to pension funds and other institutional investors in the areas of responsible investment, corporate governance, voting and engagement on assets managed by third party fund managers.

He is also responsible, as Director of Corporate Governance for Hermes Pensions Management Ltd, for the direction, development and management of corporate governance and responsible investment in relation to Hermes’ equity shareholdings, directing the largest corporate governance resource of any fund management company.

Mr Melvin is currently an active member of various industry steering groups and committees including those of the United Nations Project on Principles for Responsible Investment, the Work Foundation Panel of Inquiry into Work and Enterprise, the Global Institutional Governance Network and the Institute of Directors Professional Accreditation Committee.

He also chaired the organizing committee for the International Corporate Governance Network’s 2005 annual conference, which attracted over 500 attendees from 37 countries. He is currently a member of the ICGN’s standing committees on executive remuneration, cross-border voting and shareholder responsibilities. He has also founded or led various investor groups including the Performance Pay Group and SRI Forum in the UK and co-drafted guidelines for corporate disclosure on social, environmental and ethical matters, which have been issued by the Association of British Insurers. In November 2001, he set up the Responsible Investors Network, to facilitate the development of corporate engagement in this area.

Previously, Mr. Melvin was Corporate Governance Manager and Secretary to the Ethics Committee at Standard Life Investments and Head of Corporate Governance at Baillie Gifford. He is also a former member of the Advisory Board to Aberforth Limited Partnership I, a fund engaged in relational and active-value investing.

Mr Melvin joined Hermes in 2002 and became CEO of Hermes Equity Ownership Services in 2005. He is an associate member of the Chartered Financial Analysts Institute and the UK Society of Investment Professionals. He holds an MA from Aberdeen University and an MPhil from Cambridge University, both in History, and a Diploma in Investment Analysis from Stirling University. He is an Associate of the Centre for Corporate Governance Research of the University of Birmingham.

Arne Mogren,

Arne Mogren is the Vice President of Climate Policy at Vattenfall AB. He studied engineering, philosophy in Gothenburg and received a M. Sc. Degree in mechanical Engineering 1978, B.A. in Philosophy, Mathematics and Economics 1976. During the 80s, he was a researcher at the Swedish Defence Research Institute in the energy futures studies field.

In 1989, he started as policy analyst in the strategic planning department at Vattenfall. Arne established Vattenfall’s Brussels office in 1992 and headed the Brussels activities until 1995. From there, he handled energy policy issues such as deregulation, nuclear phase out and taxation in Sweden during the second part of the 90s. Up until his present heading of Vattenfall’s newly established Climate Policy Office, Arne was responsible for Public Affairs on group level from 2001 to 2006.

Euan is responsible for running projects to develop the Carbon Trust company strategy, use market insight to inform business and policy-makers and to provide strategy consultancy services to other parts of the Carbon Trust organisation. Most recently, Euan has been working to develop an offering to address carbon emissions across the supply chain and the carbon footprint of consumer products.

Prior to joining the Carbon Trust, Euan was responsible for strategy and product development for Accucard, a financial services start-up. He has also worked as a consultant with Mitchell Madison Group, a strategic management consultancy, on projects in construction & engineering, manufacturing, retail, agriculture and financial services in the UK, Italy, the Netherlands and Germany.

Chris Tuppen co-ordinates development of BT’s global strategy across the social, environmental and economic dimensions of sustainable development. Lord Adair Turner,
Global authority on the economics of climate change


Lord Adair Turner of Ecchinswell has combined careers in business, public policy and academia. He is currently a non executive director of Standard Chartered PLC, Siemens Holdings plc, United Business Media plc, and Paternoster Ltd. and was, until recently, chair of the UK Pensions Commission. Lord Turner is also a visiting professor at the London School of Economics and CASS Business School, City of London and was appointed as an independent cross bench peer in the House of Lords in 2005. Lord Turner worked for British Petroleum and Chase Manhattan Bank before joining McKinsey and Co in 1982. He became a partner in 1988 and a director in 1994. From 1995 to 1999 Lord Turner was Director General of the Confederation of British Industry, and was Vice-Chairman of Merrill Lynch Europe from 2000-2006. Lord Turner is a trustee of the World Wide Fund for Nature UK and of Save the Children UK.

Antony Turner is founder and Managing Director of CarbonSense. He set up the company in 2003 to help businesses and other organisations become part of the solution to climate change. He has worked with numerous high profile organisations on developing their climate change strategies, and produced a number of groundbreaking reports on the subject. In 2000 he wrote the industry submission on wave and tidal power for the House of Commons Science & Technology Committee, and more recently co-authored BT's “What would a genuinely carbon neutral BT look like”.

His career before starting CarbonSense was principally in engineering where he built a successful track-record launching innovative technologies and solutions worldwide. In 1999 he helped set up the ‘Business & Sustainability’ courses at Schumacher College, which he managed for five years. He has also helped pioneer a number of pivotal climate change initiatives such as HM Treasury’s ‘Carbon as Currency’ event.

He believes most tough questions in life can be answered by asking “what would nature do?”


Dr Sally Uren,
Director,
Forum for the Future


Role: Helping the business community realise the opportunity agenda presented by sustainable development. Sally is particularly interested in assisting the retail, construction, transport and financial services sector tackle sustainability. She is very keen to demonstrate the competitive advantages of leadership on this agenda for business.

Background: Sally joined Forum's Business Programme in 2002. Since then she's been working with business partners across all sectors get to grips with sustainability, has overseen and contributed to a wide range of research projects - all designed to unlock the links between sustainable development and successful business – and has presented at both national and international conferences.

She has been appointed by HRH Prince of Wales as an advisor to Duchy Originals. She is also an independent advisor to The Carbon Neutral Company and most recently she has become the independent chair Land Rover’s carbon offset scheme. Sally is a judge on numerous sustainability awards, including the Network Rail and IGD foods industry awards. Sally co-authored Forum’s ground-breaking publication Leader Business, which sets out what we think constitutes best practice in embedding sustainability into business.

Prior to joining the Forum, Sally founded and directed the Sustainability Group at private consultancy Casella Stanger (now owned by Bureau Veritas).

Education: Sally completed a post doctorate research fellowship funded by DfID (then the ODA) in optimal nutrient regimes for encouraging the regeneration of logged rainforest in Borneo. She also did a PhD on the impacts of nitrogenous deposition on semi natural ecosystems at Imperial College, London. Her BSc was in Biology at Manchester.


Dominic Waughray,
Director of Environmental Initiatives,
World Economic Forum


Education: BA (Hons) in Geography, Selwyn College, University of Cambridge UK; MSc in Environmental and Resource Economics, University College London.

Dominic is Director of Environmental Initiatives at the World Economic Forum. He coordinates a global public-private dialogue project on climate change, which brings together 60 leading multinational busineses to engage with G8 and +5 Governments to discuss key elements of long term climate change policy and clean energy financing issues. Water also forms part of Dominic's project responsibility at the Forum. Dominic joined the World Economic Forum in December 2005. At the World Ecomomic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos 2007, Climate change was a major topic for discussion.

Prior to working at the World Economic Forum, Dominic was a Managing Partner with Environmental Resources Management (ERM) UK Ltd, part of the ERM Group, the worlds largest environmental consultancy. As well as being part of the management team for the overall business, Dominic maintained a technical focus on environment, policy and developing country issues, with clients drawn from both the public (development aid agencies, governments) and private (mostly oil, gas and mining) sectors. Dominic's particular areas of client focus were water and climate change related issues. Prior to 8 years at ERM, Dominic worked 3.5 years as an environmental economist for the UK Natural Environmental Research Council Institute of Hydrology. In the past, Dominic has also worked on environmental economic issues for Friends of the Earth (UK) and for the UK Labour Party. Dominic has extensive country experience as a result of working on many environment related projects within Africa, the Middle East, South Asia and the Caucuses & Central Asia. He has also produuced a number of publications and articles on water, climate change and the environment and sits on the steer board of several environment and research initiatives. Dominic is married and has one son.

Tristan Wilkinson,
Director of Business,
INTEL


Tristan is the Director of Business in the UK for Intel, responsible for the expansion of the Enterprise & SMB sectors within the UK. His responsibilities cover the strategic direction for these areas as well as managing the team that deliver the day-to-day business initiatives.

Tristan sits on several external committees including the Broadband Stakeholder Group Digital Challenge steering group, Information Age Partnership, the DTI advisory board and the Scottish Digital Inclusion panel as well as being a member of The Chemistry Club and the CBI.

During the past six years with Intel, Tristan has held a number of roles, mostly within the Telecoms division and has been responsible for a number of EMEA initiatives based around server and desktop platforms. In addition, Tristan was closely involved with the launch of the UK’s Home Computing Initiative (HCI) in 2004.

Prior to Intel, Tristan was the Head of Marketing for PSINet a Global corporate ISP and Marketing Manager for Conduit Business Information, a supplier of database solutions.
